Well, so, you know that we as humans are able to master a skill. A skill is something dat we are able to do, and we then can be said have a bad skill and a good skill at doing some thing. Some thing like basket weaving, it takes considerable skill to make baskets which are durable and those who are of a quality, meaning they last longer, prized by those who use them
Then we have question of wat do do with such skill? If a good basket weaver can only produce for example ten baskets a month, how many basket craftspeople do we need to satisfy a berry picking operation in village? Perhaps, then, more should be trained in a basket weaving craft and the output of baskets will increase. Quality will drop but it will satisfy the demand, any way, point is dat this is how skill is built up. By continous practice, the durability of it will hopefully increase. Because the skill of the producer will increase, it is in the hands of a craftsman to produce something that directly represents their skill
In modern times, craftswomen and like are mostly associated with luxury. Luxury, in its "traditional" sense, simply means something that is guranteed to be durable and retain its value for as much. So, leather jackets that are made by a competent craftswoman will last long and retain its value simply because of the skill that manifests in making such a jacket. In curernt understanding of luxury, wat it means is the name and social status that you gain by possesing it. If you have a Hermes bag, well, this directly mirrors you as a person. The quality of a Hermes bag can be prized, but quality is not the point, the point is fashon(consuming preference of a group in a given time). In our world where luxury seems to be attainable, in its subverted understanding, by anyone who wills to spend money, it is no surprise that people will be taken by this utopia that you could gain class by simply consuming the fashionable way. But dat is not wat happens. People who were born in richness and people who werent, and yet consuming all the same luxury, like a Hermes bag, it doesnt make them more similar. It doesnt tie them together, those people's class doesnt intersect so wat is created is more categories for people who werent born in richness. People who are poor but have a Hermes bag, while not really a big possibility, are a contradiction, so for them it would be just kinda a stupidity to own such an expensive item.
